Why Is Apologetics So Important?

by Joel Kautt

1. God Commands it.  2 Tim. 2:15 “Study to shew thyself approved unto God…rightly dividing the word of truth.”

2. It is essential for Evangelism. Paul made an apologetic defense before presenting the Gospel to the Athenians. Acts 17:16 – 31 (NIV) “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands…” · Apologetics can be used to answer skeptics, answer sincere questions and remove “stumbling blocks”. It is also useful for showing that Christianity isn’t just a “blind faith” (a salesman should know his product well).

3. It is useful for Strengthening your own faith. · Standing against Satan’s tactics of casting doubt against the Word of God, by gaining a deepening knowledge of and understanding of the Bible. (See 1 Cor. 15:58 & Eph. 6:10 – 18)

4. It is useful for strengthening the faith of fellow Christians. (See Heb. 10:23-24

5. It is useful for defending the Faith against Skeptics. (1 Peter 3:15 NIV) “…in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…” (See also Tit. 1:9, Jude 3)
