The Mysterious Islands Review

The Mysterious Islands:

A Surprising Journey to Darwin’s Eden”

Presented by Doug Phillips and Vision Forum Ministries

And Erwin Brothers Films

Set in the exotic Galápagos Islands, this beautifully produced documentary examines the scientific misconceptions propounded by Charles Darwin, as well as the resulting lifestyles driven by the molecules-to-man belief system.

In 2009, one hundred-fifty years after Darwin published ON THE ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES, Dr. John Morris (Institute for Creation Research) leads an expedition to the enchanting Galápagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador.  Joining Dr. Morris are Doug Phillips and his son, the Erwin Brothers Films crew and a few others. Why make this trip? Mr. Phillips calls this place the “Ground Zero” of Darwinism, because what Darwin “found” here helped congeal his theory of evolution. The expedition’s goal is to determine whether these isolated bits of volcanic land are evidence for Creation or for evolution. Ultimately, their question is: Has Darwin’s evolutionary thesis – birthed at Galápagos – conquered Christianity?

Geologist John Morris, whom Phillips dubbed a “generalist,” speaks to a broad range of Galápagos-pertinent scientific topics on this dream trip of a lifetime. Throughout their stay, Jon Erwin pelts Mr. Phillips and Dr. Morris with questions Jon had never before considered on the topic of the origins debate.

The viewer is treated to stunning cinematography, accompanied by compelling music. An intense azure ocean contrasts sharply with rust and ebony volcanic rock. The waters surrounding these islands teem with a variety of sea creatures including non-threatening sharks, while the shoreline literally crawls with red crabs, sea lions and marine iguanas. Lush gnarled mangrove trees choke a swamp, where monstrous tortoises breed.

In the midst of breathtaking scenery and curious animals, these men discuss the scientific problems with Darwin’s theory. For instance, Dr. Morris gives evidence for the short age of the earth using oceanic salt concentration, volcanic ash layers, and the moon. The gentlemen point out that what we have learned about genetics in recent years makes Darwin’s idea of molecules-to-man evolution laughable.

Sadly, that information was not available in Darwin’s time. If it had been, maybe things would have fallen out differently. The film dramatizes the influence Darwin’s theory had on certain key historical figures, and how they in turn masterminded events that sicken and anger us: the extermination camps of Hitler, the eugenics of Margaret Sanger, and the inhumane treatment of Australian aborigines, to mention a few.

My only complaint with the film is that the on-screen quotes are consistently difficult to read. Our family has viewed this several times. There is so much to see. The bonus disc contains extras to delight the scientist in anyone. You can purchase the documentary directly from Vision Forum Ministries, or from the Institute for Creation Research or Answers in Genesis.

I believe “The Mysterious Islands” will be used to affirm the faith of Christians as well as to evangelize the lost. In closing, I follow the pattern given throughout the documentary, by pointing us to our Creator:

[The LORD] appointed the moon for seasons; the sun knows its going down.

You make darkness, and it is night, in which all the beasts of the forest creep about.

The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their food from God.

When the sunrises, they gather together and lie down in their dens.

Man goes out to his work and to his labor until the evening.

O LORD, how manifold are Your works!  In wisdom You have made them all.

The earth is full of Your possessions – this great and wide sea,

In which are innumerable teeming things, living things both small and great….

These all wait for You, that You may give them their food in due season.

What You give them they gather in; You open Your hand, they are filled with good.

You hide Your face, they are troubled; You take away their breath,

They die and return to their dust.  You send forth Your Spirit,

They are created; and You renew the face of the earth.

May the Glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in His works.

He looks on the earth, and it trembles; He touches the hills, and they smoke.

I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.

May my meditation be sweet to Him; I will be glad in the LORD….

Bless the LORD, O my soul!

Praise the LORD!
